How Oral Sedation Can Keep You Calm In The Dentist’s Chair

You have an appointment with your Florida dentist. It might just be for a dental cleaning or it might be for much-needed dental work. In either case, you are scared of sitting in that chair and having work done. This is something that many people have felt for decades. But staying away from the dentist can be very dangerous – things can happen in your mouth that can affect far more than just your teeth.

But what to do? There is a solution – oral sedation. It can keep you calm and relaxed while the dentist does their job. The diest will also numb certain areas of your mouth. It can be a game-changer for you.

Like everything else in life, though, it is not perfect. There are reasons why it would be an excellent option for you and there are also reasons why you should consider other ways to calm yourself in the dentist’s chair. Read on to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of sedation dentistry

In the past, choices ranged from nitrous oxide to some IV sedatives. Now all it takes is a mere pill. It has become quite mainstream: Oral sedation is widely-used in dental offices. Here are some reasons why you should strongly consider having it done.

  • There Are No Needles – This is a prime reason. If you have a strong dislike of needles, this is the option for you. There are no needles used at all when administering it.
  • It’s Easily Administered – There is no muss or fuss when it comes to the dentist applying the sedative. You will likely get it in pill form roughly an hour before the appointment.
  • You Won’t Remember It – The sedative will make the appointment a blur in your mind. You won’t remember it, which is great if you are afraid of the dentist.
  • It’s Very Safe – The FDA regulates what sedatives are given, which means that you won’t have to worry about any side effects.
  • You Can Be Responsive – While you won’t remember the procedure, you will be awake enough to follow instructions from the dentist. That will make things go smoothly.

  • You Won’t Feel Effects Immediately  – When you take the pill, you have to wait for an hour. Nitrous oxide or an IV is faster. You will have to get to the dentist early to take the pill so that you will be ready when it is time for your appointment.
  • The Levels Are Hard To Change – There is no baseline level for people to metabolize the sedative. So adjusting the dosage can be tricky, even for the most experienced dentists.
  • You Need Someone To Drive You – Like many other types of medication, you should not be driving after taking the sedative, even if you feel like it has worn off. Your reflexes will still be impaired, which makes driving extra dangerous. You will be required to have someone drive you there and pick you up.

While it may seem like the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, it is your decision. But you do need to go to a Tarpon Springs dentist twice a year for cleanings. Otherwise you risk getting gum disease which can quickly spread in your mouth and cause problems like loose teeth and even infections that can cause bacteria to go into your bloodstream. If that happens, you can have conditions like heart disease and even some forms of cancer. Twice yearly visits can allow the dentist to catch those things early and give you the best chance of reversing the condition or getting early treatment.

Dentists strive to make people feel as comfortable as possible during each and every visit. Conquering dental phobia is a very real thing that people have to do. Medicine has found a way to allow people to feel better when they see the dentist.  Now it is up to you to take advantage of it – for both the health of your teeth and your overall body.
