In many cases the tooth can be removed right away. Removing the source of infection promptly, while treating the infection at the same time, is often the best approach. The final call is up to the oral surgeon.

Removal may be delayed if numbing medication can't fully take effect (infections can block it), if there's risk of spreading the infection, if you can't open your mouth wide enough, or if a preexisting medical condition requires special care or hospitalization.
